Welcoming New Players: A Short Guide

Posted by destinjames

Last night I went to a friend’s BBQ party, and  three interesting things happened: I broke up a dogfight (wow, that was crazy), afterwards someone said ‘frolf’ during a conversation, and then lastly someone else said ‘frolf’ again within the same hour.

Even though the dogfight was crazy and gave me minor injuries and quite the adrenaline rush, the use of the word ‘frolf’ captured my attention the most, and it got me thinking…

The sport of Disc Golf is still growing, but there are a lot of players that don’t understand how truly amazing Disc Golf is.

Here is my short guide to welcoming new players to the wonderful sport of Disc Golf.

#1

Be convincing that’s it’s worth their time. Take them to a scenic and/or relatively flat course – it will be more playable and enjoyable for a beginner.

I personally recommend buying them a beer (21 and over of course!) before the round, or buy/give them a disc… It will have more impact on whether they play again or not.

#2

A new player will always ask, “What’s the best disc to use?” and you should give options – and in my years of playing, you should always say “mid-range” and a recommendation. Once they have played, they will find a certain disc that fits their hand and throwing style.

#3

Give them a crash-course on the physics of how a golf disc flies. Teach them what understable, overstable, and stable is. I recommend throwing a couple discs from your bag to demonstrate – also, let them know about thumbing (thumber) and tomahawking. For right-handed throwers, thumbing will make the disc curve to the left, and opposite for tomahawks.

 #4

ALWAYS be courteous. A lot of new players take a while to learn and straighten their throw, make sure you’re quiet and patient during throws and be positive towards them no matter how far they go off course – and congratulate them on successful fairway drives!

This wonderful sport still needs a lot of players. If you play, don’t be afraid to invite a friend you think might like hitting chains for the first time – chances are, they wanted to hang out and have a great time outside anyway.

Lots of Chain Noise,

 😀estin

New Dogleg Disc Golf Promo Video — Online Now!

Posted by themightyscagg

Greetings, all!  It is time for the unveiling of what could arguably be the internet’s most rad disc golf video ever produced.  No, I’m not just saying that because I produced it (OK, I admit — it might be because of that).

I had the opportunity to get some great footage of Destin, JT and me playing at Wills Park in Alpharetta, GA this weekend.  The video, entitled “Rules of Disc Golf,” highlights what happened during about an hour-and-a-half round of play, all while informing what we feel will help you get the best out of your experience by following these simple rules.

The video was produced the next day, and within four hours of production, I had written and recorded a rock groove for the background soundtrack, fully organized the clips, and exported the clip sequence that was ready for upload.  Talk about a productive weekend, right??  🙂

We had a blast making it, and we hope you have a blast watching it.  Enjoy!

Rocket City Blast!

Posted by alphagenerator

Below may be a great chance for all of us to get together and play this month.   Two days 4 courses over Memorial Day weekend in Huntsville, AL…. Tim this may be a good reason for you to come into town to “visit” the in laws.  =)

The Arsenal will be part of the series!  Let me know if you plan on making the trip.

Jeremiah

The Rocket City Blast, hosted by the Rocket City Chain Gang, will be held on May 26th & 27th covering four courses. For your disc golf pleasure, the field will play Monte Sano, Brahan Springs, Mastin Lake, and Redstone Arsenal.

This event will be PDGA sanctioned as C-Tier for Pros & B-Tier for AMs with a minimum of 120% paid out to AMs.

Sponsorships will be in more detail later but, as a preliminary, hole sponsorship will be offered at each course for $25 each, which will include a personalized sign and a select disc. The sponsorship can be designated to your field of choice (pro, adv, int, ect). On a side note, if a title sponsor wishes to donate the required amount of money, then the sanctioning can bump to the next tier (ie if someone sponsors $500 to Pro, then it will become a B-tier).

I’ll have more information soon. Questions/Comments are welcomed.

Discasaurus – New Disc Golf Score Tracking App for the iPhone/Android!

Posted by randomtiz

Hey guys I’ve got a new disc golf app that you all should check out!

It’s a brand new app that will hit the App Store within the next week or two. I’ve been messing around trying out a TestFlight version of this app most of the day today and I would like to share my review with you.

Interface:
First off, the name of the app is called Discasaurus. This is a score tracking disc golf app unlike any other I’ve come across out there. Its interface is very user-friendly and has a nice, polished look to all the graphics. A lot of the free disc golf apps I’ve used before have crappy graphics and appear as if they were thrown together in Microsoft Paint. Not this one. I really like its web 2.0 look and feel. The text is very legible and the buttons are large—great for those with clumsy thumbs and on-the-fly scoring.

Now let me take a few minutes to introduce and walk you through this handy app. You’ll be able to set up and start using this app by the time you reach the end of this article. Bet.

Getting Started: Setup
The setup process maybe takes 3-5 minutes, so here it goes! To get started, you’ll need to upload the course directory for your state. This is quick and very easy to do. From the main screen, you’ll go to “Settings” and hit “Update Course Directory.” Simply find your state and hit update. I was impressed by how quickly the courses loaded. When I selected Georgia, it was a mere 4 sec and boom!, loaded. You’ll probably be prompted to allow GPS location so it can find nearby courses for your area. From there, select your course and choose between the Blue or White tees, then hit “Start.”

At some point it will ask you to enter your name, email address and choose a disc color. I would recommend taking a few extra minutes and sign up on Discasaurus.com (This will be extra beneficial later. Hold your horses, I’ll get to that part later.) =)

Starting a Round: Scoring
Now you’re ready to start! Scoring on this app is very intuitive—simply tap the screen for each shot you took. ie. If you scored a par, tap the screen 3 times. One thing that was confusing to me was how to correct your scoring if you messed up. I tend to type/tap fast and I accidentally tapped one too many strokes for a particular hole. At first, I couldn’t figure out how to reset the hole but after playing around several minutes, tapping everything possible and visible on the screen, I finally figured it out. Simply press down on the screen for 2 seconds and it will reset that hole. Upon later troubleshoot, I found two more ways to correct the scoring. 1) Two-finger touch decreases score by one stroke; 2) Three-finger touch resets the score too with a vibration. However, I do wish there was some sort of Tutorial that had a few quick instructions on setting up/scoring. It’s all pretty straightforward, but that confusion earlier created a slight roadblock for me.

To advance to the next hole, just swipe your finger to the left and you’ll jump to the next hole. You can go back a hole by swiping your finger to the right.

Get ready for this. Some of the best is yet to come! When you finish out the 18th screen, you have the option of submitting your score to Discasaurus’ website. This is where the Sign Up from earlier will come into play.

Expand the Experience! Submit Your Score to Discasaurus.com!
I told you the best is yet to come and I wasn’t lying. Once you’ve signed up with a free account on Discasaurus.com, you have the ability to submit your round scores directly from the app. But that’s not all, there are LOTS more of cool stuff on the site available with your free account. By signing up, you’ll be able to create your own personal profile. You can choose a username and upload a picture to attach to your own profile. You can even set your city and state AND add your favorite courses as well to it.

Connect with friends and other Discasaurus users from across the nation! See their recent scores, profiles, and favorite courses. Check out the course directory to find courses, scores, and pics of courses in your area. They even post leaderboards and recent scores for every course on there, awesome! Keep track of all your rounds and see how well you stand up with other fellow Discasaurus app fanatics! Another neat feature I’ve never seen before is the profile widget (see pic on right). You can paste this anywhere on the web. It tracks your average rounds/scores for friends to see. Well worth checking out, you won’t be sorry. Look for it in the app store soon, Discasaurus!

First post! – Dogleg Roots

Posted by randomtiz

Welcome to Dogleg Disc Golf! I’m very new to this whole blogging thing so please bear with me. Dogleg Disc Golf is an idea I had a few months ago about one of my new favorite hobbies. I came up with the name and thought it had a nice lil ring to it. So I checked GoDaddy, and sure enough, it was available. So I purchased it not really knowing what I wanted to do with it for the time-being. Maybe an online store one day, but for now it will most likely be my disc golf blog and/or forum amongst some of my closest friends.

Several of my friends have really gotten into disc golf over the past few months to a year. We talk about it all the time and discuss our round scores and favorites discs. So why not put it all online? My first idea I was thinking about creating a group on Facebook where we could upload pics, scores, and chat about the sport. Then I was thinking if we went online with it–like a forum–we could potentially reach a broader audience. Eventually even getting to where lots more users could discuss different topics and reviews of everything disc golf.

So like I said, this is just the beginning. Not sure where it will eventually lead, but for now it will be a blog until I can figure this forum stuff out and get that going. This blog will start by being the home of some of my round stories, disc and course reviews. Let me know if you have any ideas, I’m open!
