Trussville Courses Closure

Posted by curly2284

“Due to construction of the greenway in Trussville, Carter Memorial Disc Golf Course and John LeMaster Memorial Disc Golf Course at Civitan Park are temporarily closed. The mayor requested that all baskets be removed from both parks. Disc Golf Birmingham will continue to work with the City of Trussville to ensure the re-installation of both courses.”

This is the official statement from Disc Golf Birmingham. There is more to the story here is the link to the related article http://www.trussvilletribune.com/?p=2074. The article states that there is an archeological site located at the park. The city had started building a walking path that was gonna run through the middle of both courses. Civitan dg course was gonna get a redesign to play safely around the walking path. The Carter course however was most likely not gonna be so lucky the proposed design was gonna run right down the middle of it and the mountain biking trails. A local disc golfer and one of the designers of the courses Joe Thacker is the one who found the archeological sight and informed the state about the find. The state of Alabama stepped in to stop construction on the walking path until a full study could be done. The mayor ordered the baskets removed to protect the site. The latest information is these courses are not coming back any time soon. Clifford Smith and Disc Golf Birmingham have stated that they are currently working with the city and Mayor of Trussville to build another course elsewhere. There are still open talks that one day these two awesome course will come back. There were a lot of emotions envolved so they are waiting on everyone to calm down to resume talks of when they may get reopened and what design they may be. Don’t expect the courses that are there to be exactly the same ever again however.

PDGA divisions and ratings

Posted by curly2284

DIVISIONS:

Class Division Name Code Ages Minimum Rating
Amateur Advanced MA1 All Any (Required for 935+)
Amateur Intermediate MA2 All < 935
Amateur Recreation MA3 All < 900
Amateur Novice MA4 All < 850
Amateur Advanced Master MM1 40+ Any
Amateur Advanced Grandmaster MG1 50+ Any
Amateur Women Advanced FW1 Any Any (Required for 800+)
Amateur Women Intermediate FW2 Any < 800
Amateur Women Advanced Master FM1 40+ Any

If you are a PDGA member and have a rating you can easily see what divisions you qualify to play in by comparing your rating to the following chart. If you do not have a PDGA rating then you can determine your approximate rating a couple ways. The best way is to compare your score at a previous tournament to other rated players at that tournament. If this is your first tournament then you can compare your average score at a course with previous tournaments at that course. To find this information you can go to www.pdga.com use the search function for the course. However, it is important to note that normally a course plays more difficult during a tournament due to additional OB lines, slower play and the pressure of competition.

RATING SYSTEM:

Now on to the rating system. The PDGA rating system calculates each player’s skill level and also the difficulty rating of each course played in PDGA events. Your Player Rating is a number that shows how close your average round scores are compared to the World Class Par (WCP) of the courses you’ve played in competition. Players who average WCP on courses played will have a rating of 1000. If they average even lower scores, their rating is over 1000.Most competition players average scores higher than WCP so their ratings range somewhere between 700-999. Every 10 points equals one throw on an 18-hole course. If you average 5 throws over WCP, your rating will be 950. Everyone has a few bad rounds. The system uses at least 85% of a player’s best rounds relative to the course WCPs from PDGA events that have been entered into the system.

Hopefully this sheds some lite on Ratings and Divisions. I personally use this as a guide im still only an 800 rated player but I will go to a tournament and compete even if it doesn’t have a novice division. I really enjoy playing rec division as a challenge, You will never be better if you don’t play against better opponents.

It’s official …

Posted by curly2284

Well I finally made it official. I am now an active member of the pdga. My pdga number is 49213. For anybody wondering it is super easy to get. Fill out the form online takes 10 minutes tops, pay them 53 dollars and you have your number. I was really trying to do it before last weekend cause I was planning on playing in my first tourney. The tourney was held at Goerge ward, but some work obligations came up so I didn’t get to play in it. But I did decide that it was time I got my membership so when I did get to play my first tourney I wouldn’t be the noob with no number, just the noob. I would suggest to everyone else who has not got there number to go ahead and do so. I absolutely cant wait till my swag gets here.

Pretty good day I finished even and Joe finished 3 over. Had a great time drank a few beers, we both made some great shots, and told some great stories. The epitome of a good day. Afterwards Joe got a tour of jasper and got to experience the excitement of our local Mexican restaurant, Pericos.

I’m not sure if any of y’all know this but there are not any dg courses in the bahammas. However I have my driver, mid, and putter with me. We have decided on one of the islands we are going to set up a mini course. I’ll keep ya posted….

New course in Hoover

Posted by curly2284

Joe actually sent me the link to the info about this course so I wanted to share it with everyone. This makes me extremely exhited this will make 4 18 hole courses in birmingham alone.

It’s official! New Course in Hoover!

DGB has received official confirmation that we’re ready to get started on Birmingham Metro’s newest course! This project has been in the works for well over a year and has finally cleared the last few hurdles to start work.

With the land provided by the City of Hoover, DGB has been tasked with installing a championship level disc golf course at the “Inverness Nature Park”. The Inverness Nature Park is a tract of land located only three miles south/east of the 459/280 interchange. The park is mostly wooded with a few open areas, rolling hills, and some water. Initial plans for the park include parking, benches & trash cans with future plans to include restrooms and a pavilion.

With the available land, we’re expecting a championship level course that will play Par 60+ from the Pro tees! Initial estimates have the Pro tees at almost 8,000′, for comparison George Ward is 5,600′! Am tees will be similar in length to George Ward but will provide additional challenges with wooded fairways and elevation.

DGB will be providing the baskets, signs, and course design for this project and we’re going to need sponsors! Sponsorship opportunities will include graphics and other information on tee-signs and baskets. If you know of any businesses that would like to support our course in Hoover please let me know.

Best round in Jasper

Posted by curly2284

Yesterday I got off work and it was a beutiful day. Sun was out it was warm almost no wind. My wife wasn’t gonna be home till around 8. I decided if I went home I was gonna just sit around the house so I decided to go play 18 at North Jasper Park by myself. Glad I did, had a great round finished -1 for day and almost aced 5 it hit the basket and then rolled to bottom of hill. Real easy toss in. If i could have putted a little better it would have been even a better round. All the bogies were me missing putts.

“Im in love with a…….. Leopard?”

Posted by curly2284

Im relatively new to the game of disc golf. So I have just recently got comfortable with my swing and controlling my throws. But the one thing I have noticed with myself and others if you are comfortable with a disc you generally are a better golfer. My Innova leopard is that disc. It is the only disc in my collection that I can grab and throw. As soon as it leaves my hand I know exactly where its going. The confidence that gives you cant be summed up in words.

I now own three leopards. Thats right T H R E E.  I have the first leopard I bought, which was a 175 dx. This is the disc that started it. In the beginning it was the only disc that I could throw straight. My new favorite is a 169 champion leopard. With it if I am less than 220 feet its getting thrown. I usually and pretty dang close with it. This is also the only disc that I can hyzer or anhyzer on command. For a backhanded newb thats saying alot. My newest is a 171 star leopard, I love the feel of it but I havnt actually played with it. Thats gonna happen very shortly though cant wait to get out with it.

If you dont have a leopard in your bag I suggest borrowing from a buddy or go out and by one and throw it around youll be happy with it. Then you could be hitting 80 ft birdy shots like tiz.
